The History of Critical Mass Seeds

Critical Mass is an Indica-dominating strain generated by crossbreeding Afghani Indica and Skunk #1. Its moniker came into being because of the strain’s ability to shatter branches owing to the weight of the wildly packed flowers. Critical Mass genetics comes from Mr. Nice Seed Bank and its redesign of an earlier genetics strain named Big Bud.

Critical Mass Seeds’ Genetic Journey

Critical Mass is a hybrid between Skunk #1 and an Afghani landrace bred by Amsterdam’s Mr. Nice Seeds. In the 1990s, growers Scott Blakey (aka Shatnibaba,) Neville Schoenmakers, and Howard Marks (aka Mr. Nice) departed Green House Seed Company to create Mr. Nice. They started redesigning some of the cultivars they developed there under brand-new names. One of the varieties was Big Bud, which they called Critical Mass.

How to Germinate Critical Mass Seeds

Starting on the right foot is crucial for your cannabis crop to flourish. Cannabis seeds may be tiny and delicate, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help them along the way as they germinate. Every strategy has advantages and downsides since various methods have varied degrees of effectiveness. It’s important to remember that even if you’re a proficient grower using cutting-edge technology, not all of your seedlings will succeed. But if you choose a tried-and-true germination method, like the paper towel approach, your odds of success skyrocket. Using paper towels, here are the nine steps to germinating your Critical Mass seeds:

  1. Soak your paper towel(s) in water or sprinkle them with water and let the excess drip off.
  2. Place a moist paper towel over one of the plates. Feel free to use three or four layers to fit within the plate. Any piece of paper towel hanging outside the plate might cause the whole paper towel to dry out soon.
  3. Sprinkle some Critical Mass seeds over the paper towel. If you’re germinating multiple seed strains or varieties, name them with a visible marker on the paper towels. If feasible, add the water initially to prevent upsetting the seeds.
  4. Cover the Critical Mass seeds with a moist paper towel or fold an existing one in half to blanket them. Using fewer layers on top lets you view the growing progress beneath without raising the moist towel.
  5. Use the second plate to cover the whole setup. Keep your seeds warm throughout the procedure by putting them near natural light or using a seedling heat pad. Avoid putting them in full sunlight or putting the mat immediately under the plate, as this can overheat your seedlings. If feasible, place a barrier between the heating pad and the seed plate, such as a hand towel, a book, or a heat-resistant divider.
  6. Check on your seeds daily during the procedure. Reapply water if you detect your paper towel becoming dry.
  7. Depending on the strain and seed quality, your seeds may sprout in a few days. When your seeds sprout, carefully peel away the top paper towel layer.
  8. A small root or two circular, golden seedling leaves will grow from the shell. Allow your seedlings more time to develop if you only see the root.
  9. If you can sufficiently identify two shooting leaves, it’s time to transplant your seedlings to their new growing mediums.

Why are Feminized Seeds Better than Regs?

Feminized seeds are a better choice if you want to save time and effort because they let you grow as many plants as you need at any given time. If you use regs, you’ll need to plant about twice as many seeds to ensure sufficient female plants after picking the males.

Feminized plants also guarantee more effective use of growth regions and lower input consumption, such as soil, fertilizer, insecticides, and other nutrients. You also don’t have to be concerned about the possible disaster when harvesting if you don’t get rid of the male plants appropriately.

Growing Critical Mass Seeds

When growing Critical Mass seeds, even inexperienced growers should be successful with their produce in terms of yields. It produces a massive harvest if kept dry, warm, and protected from excessive moisture. This plant produces a lot of buds, which may get heavy and weigh down the branches, so it might require some extra help keeping itself up.

Should You Grow Critical Mass Seeds Indoors or Outdoors?

You can grow your Critical Mass seeds either indoors or outdoors. However, these crops do well in a moderate and steady climate.

Growing Critical Mass Seeds Indoors

Feed and water the plant regularly if you are growing Critical Mass indoors. Likewise, humidity and temperature must be closely monitored to avoid mold growth on the buds. Critical Mass cannabis is sensitive to high humidity levels. As a result, humidity levels should be maintained at roughly 50% throughout the vegetative stage and lowered to 35% or even 30% when the buds begin to develop.

Temperatures between 68 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with nighttime lows of no less than 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, are preferred. A heat lamp might help keep the temperature right if you’re growing indoors.

Benefits

One of the most common reasons for cultivating this plant indoors, and in many respects the basis for its existence, is its incredibly high yield. It can blossom as early as eight weeks if properly cared for. Another advantage of growing inside is that you will have more control over your surroundings and can better recreate the optimum weather conditions.

Are there any drawbacks to growing Critical Mass seeds indoors?

The only real issue when growing indoors is that the buds may become so heavy that you’ll need to harvest them or construct some support to keep the branches from breaking, but you can easily remedy this.

Growing Critical Mass Seeds Outdoors

Growing this plant outdoors requires a Mediterranean environment to produce a quality harvest from a single plant. Outside, blossoming occurs towards the middle of September.

Pros

When grown outdoors, Critical Mass is particularly resistant to pests like spiders and mites, which may cause major difficulties for other strains.

Cons

Molds, which often attack plants in damp environments, pose a threat to outdoor cannabis crops and need special care from producers. The humidity can also cause bud rot.

The Best Grow Medium for Critical Mass Seeds

You can grow Critical Mass seeds in either soil or hydroponics setups.

The Best Climate for Critical Mass Seeds

When cultivating outside, you should aim for a climate similar to the Mediterranean. If you give Critical Mass enough light and warmth and protect it from humidity and rain, it will produce abundantly.

Problems to Look Out For When Growing Critical Mass Seeds

One of the most significant issues you should watch out for when growing Critical Mass seeds is mold and mildew buildup due to the plant’s dense foliage. Dense buds can also increase the humidity significantly and lead to bud rot.

How Difficult Is It to Grow Critical Mass Seeds?

The breeders behind Critical Mass created it with the express intention of making cultivation simpler for growers.

Are Critical Mass Seeds Suitable for Beginners?

Growing a Critical Mass is a good first plant for those with little gardening experience. They have the traits of other indica strains, such as being short, strong, and compact, making them ideal for first-time growers.

How Much Do Critical Mass Seeds Yield?

Indoors, Critical Mass typically produces around 27 ounces per square meter of high-quality bud, whereas outdoors, it typically produces about 21 ounces per plant.

How to Get Better Yields from Your Critical Mass Seeds

To increase your Critical Mass seeds, you should use various training techniques. For instance, pruning helps keep the plant dry and free of disease-causing molds and mildew. Likewise, for better yields, you should protect the branches from breaking during blooming by installing supports or using the Screen of Green method.

The Best Grow Techniques for Critical Mass Seeds

The following are the best growth techniques for Critical Mass seeds:

SCROG

Lay a screen over your crop to perform SCROG on your Critical Mass plants. Then, as the plant grows, you gently weave the stems through the screen to create a uniform canopy so that all bud positions receive ample light and air. It boosts bud formation while reducing lateral growth, which is beneficial when growing indoors. It’s especially helpful with the dense foliage of the Critical Mass plants.

Pruning

Pruning entails removing chosen leaves, assuming that what remains will be used by the remainder of the plant. It helps eliminate lower popcorn buds, increasing airflow around the plants’ bases and focusing on a heavy crown at the top. You can get the plant to focus its energy on making the best buds by cutting off the lower branches that don’t produce the flowers you want. Likewise, pruning your Critical Mass plants increases air circulation, especially with the dense buds.

Low-stress training

The goal of LST is to generate a homogeneous, multi-tipped canopy by lowering specific areas of the canopy and allowing light to reach the interior of the plants. Using rope, metal wire, or even weights can sometimes work better than anything to tie downside branches. Carefully bending the main cola down on an untopped plant gives the remaining budding sites a greater opportunity to compete.

The consistent height of the canopy ensures that all bud sites are exposed to the same amount of light and develop at the same rate, making this training approach very effective for Critical Mass seeds.

What does a Critical Mass plant look like?

The maximum height of this plant is 65 inches, or roughly 5 1/2 feet (1.65 meters). This strain’s structure is typical of Indicas. The tiny, claw-shaped wasabi green sepals are accented with armadillo brown and sparkle brightly in the sunlight. Short, thick-stalked trichomes topped with huge heads provide the plant a dense appearance, particularly during harvest times.
