Gelato's genetic lineage includes the taste-engineered Thin Mint and Girl Scout Cookie strains and the fruity indica Sunset Sherbert. Cookie Fam Genetics of San Francisco has created many different numbered phenotypes of Gelato, and phenotype #33 has been affectionately dubbed Larry Bird in homage to the renowned basketball player's jersey number.
A cross between Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Cookies was the first step in developing the Gelato strain, which Sherbinski and Jigga's Gelato established. They produced mostly high-quality phenotypes. Each phenotype was assigned a number and tracked throughout the research. In the end, only 25 phenotypes were chosen. The now-famous Gelato variety sprang from the seeds of this endeavor.
The Gelato bag seed and clones were kept under wraps by Cookie Fam breeders Sherbinski and Jigga but were later made available to the public.
The germination stage is crucial to get your garden off to a good start. The paper towel technique for seed germination remains one of the simplest and most successful methods for getting your cannabis seeds to sprout. You're germinating seeds between two moist paper towels and a pair of plates, which create an enclosed and dark setting for a few days. If you do everything properly, the seeds will sprout around this period.
Feminized cannabis seeds are preferred for cultivation because they guarantee female plants that produce the desired buds. They also lead to an increased yield and superior quality. Regular seeds have a 50/50 chance of producing male plants, which are undesirable for growers as they don't yield flowers. By eliminating the risk of male plants, feminized seeds save time, effort, and space. It ensures a more efficient and cost-effective cultivation process, maximizing successful and robust harvesting potential.
Gelato develops tight and hefty buds that might take on a purple or blue hue when cultivated in cold temperatures. This strain has a good to great yield and generates a lot of cannabinoids and terpenes. Orange pistils protrude from the flower buds, and the leaves have frosty trichomes that sparkle in the light.
Gelato seeds are an excellent option for growers, and you may plant them indoors or outdoors; however, indoor grows are suggested because of their greater control over environmental factors.
Because it is so challenging to cultivate, this plant does best when you grow it indoors, preferably in a grow tent. That's because you can set the temperature exactly as you want it. In 8β9 weeks, depending on the conditions, you may anticipate to harvest.
Growing Gelato seeds indoors allows you to control environmental factors, significantly improving harvest time and yields. You also get to plant multiple times throughout the year.
Gelato plants require much attention when growing and might not be ideal if you don't want to spend time nurturing your plants.
Mild and dry weather are ideal for cultivating your crop outdoors. The best time to harvest feminized Gelato strain buds is in October. Exposing the strain to a cooler temperature before the flowering period would improve its quality.
Gelato seeds can produce a massive harvest when growing outside under optimal conditions. Likewise, with more room to grow, you won't have to keep training your plants unless necessary.
One of the noticeable drawbacks of growing Gelato seeds outdoors is that the plants require controlled temperature and humidity. If you don't do this, your plants may be susceptible to pathogens.
You can grow Gelato seeds in a hydroponic system, although growing in soil is a much better option.
Growing these seeds requires a consistently warm and humid climate.
Based on its Girl Scout Cookie (GSC) heritage, this hybrid breed needs substantial doses of calcium and magnesium. As such, some of the problems you may encounter are calcium and magnesium deficiency. Additionally, without sufficient airflow, you may encounter a bud rot.
Gelato strain seeds are significantly more difficult to grow than other kinds.
Gelato seeds are suitable for individuals with cannabis production expertise who are looking for a new challenge.
The Gelato strain yields well, ranging from 17 to 24oz based on growth conditions.
If you want to boost your Gelato yields, training techniques should be your friend with this one. For instance, you may want to use some LST training during the vegetative stage. This plant also does well in SCROG or SOG setup. Additionally, topping and mainlining will increase light dispersion and airflow, boosting overall harvest.
Use the following growing techniques when growing Gelato seeds:
ScrOG, or the Screen of Green method, is easy to understand and implement. Add a mesh screen to the list of necessary equipment. As the stems of your Gelato plant develop, they will learn to pass easily through the mesh. The resulting flat structure is better for the grow lights or sunlight penetrating. Your flower garden will benefit, too.
ScrOG's ability to let more light in might lead to greater yields. Fostering a uniform canopy may help growers maximize yields while minimizing waste. The method also facilitates keeping tabs on your plants' development, wellness, maintenance, and pruning needs.
Rather than focusing on a few large plants, Sea of Green seeks to grow a variety of smaller ones. Farmers who don't coax their plants into producing many individual blooms might reap bountiful harvests in a shorter time. The important argument is that seedlings should be allowed to develop for 4-5 weeks before being converted into flowering mode. Since each plant doesn't have to reach a certain size before flowering, the time required to do so might be cut by a few weeks. When a seedling has four or five sets of leaves, you should "top" it.
This method is a little more involved than basic low-stress training, and its main purpose is to promote balanced plant development. The idea behind mainlining is to leave just the main stem of a plant and cut off all of its smaller branches. Two major shoots might then develop from the two axillary branches. To make a letter T, visualize a capital letter Y as your starting point, and then develop from that form by tying down the two side shoots.
Although this training approach may sometimes be taxing and counterproductive, perseverance is key. The plant's symmetrical architecture ensures that each bud blooms and develops similarly by sending signals along each channel. In certain cases, the effect is quite remarkable.
Gelato has petite flowers, but its dense structure is typical of indica strains. The strain's vivid orange pistils stand against the forest green foliage, further accentuating the rich purple hues. Cold temperatures trigger the anthocyanin pigments in which the purple colors reside during the vegetative stage. The buds of this strain are sticky, but the trichomes have such short stalks that they don't seem as icy as others.
