The History of Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
If you have been on the hunt for a fully feminized strain that offers a perfectly even balance of both Sativa and Indica, a genetic lineage fit screams top-shelf excellence (Kush Mints Feminized is a cross of Bubba Kush and Animal Mints), and even a cultivar that makes growing as easy as can be?
Then your search is over…
The Kush Mints Feminized strain is one of the most exciting new school offerings currently available and should be at the very top of every weed connoisseur’s list. The genetics have been carefully crafted, back bred to a super high level of pheno stability, and perfected by our master growers in order to offer home cultivators (and commercial growers) the chance to bring to life some of the best buds the Pacific Northwest has ever produced.
How to Germinate Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
While there is certainly more than one single method for cannabis seed germination success, we like to stick to our proven nine-step process.
Sure, there is nothing stopping you from just placing the seed directly into the growing medium, giving them a light watering, and waiting to see if the seedlings emerge. But keep in mind that simply dropping them into the ground and hoping for the best adds a decent amount of guesswork to proceedings. Once those seeds are covered up, there’s really no way of knowing how the germination process is progressing.
By using the groundwork laid out below, you will be able to ensure that each and every one of those precious little beans not only germinates, but has the best chance at growing into the type of plant dreams are made of. Following these steps can also speed up germination times, and eliminate a great deal of extra work down the road in terms of diagnosing and correcting any potential problems.
- Seed soaking – By dumping the seeds into some room temperature tap water (that has been pH adjusted to 5.5 and 6.5), you can dramatically speed up the overall germination process. Be sure not to leave the seeds soaking for longer than 12 hours, as this can actually lead to the seeds becoming overly hydrated and essentially drowning.
- Napkins are next – Once the seeds have been fully hydrated, it is time to grab a couple of unbleached, fragrance-free napkins or kitchen towel. This is important, as we do not want to add any extra chemicals into the process.
- Carefully moisten the napkins – Get some more of that room temperature tap water (that has also been pH adjusted to 5.5 to 6.5) and use it to carefully wet the napkins. We are looking for napkins that are just slightly moist, so give them a good squeeze out before proceeding.
- Cover the bottom of a Tupperware container with a napkin – gently place each soaked seed onto the napkin, and cover them with another moistened napkin or paper towel square.
- Always use separate containers for different strains – It is next to impossible to differentiate different strains from each other just by looking at the seeds. Do yourself a favor and always use separate containers for separate strains, and always make sure you label each one clearly.
- Close that container – You will want to check on the seeds at least once a day, and make sure the containers are kept in a totally dark environment that is sitting in the 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C) range.
- Don’t let the napkins dry out – If the napkins need a little extra water, use a spray mister to add some hydration to the germination station. The last thing you want is for the seeds to dry out and die.
- Taproot time – As soon as the tap root reaches no more than a half-inch long, it is time to get the seed into the growing substrate. Leaving the root to develop any further can result in mold issues and seed death.
- Prepare the pots – Fill your pots with whatever substrate you are using and get those seeds in, giving them a very light watering once they have been planted.
Why are Feminized Seeds Better than Regs?
Feminized seeds have revolutionized the cultivation game, but why are they so heavily preferred over regular, unfeminized seeds?
Well, unless you are looking to start up a breeding program and create your own, unique strains there really are zero reasons to buy regular seeds (unless the strain you are looking to grow doesn’t come in a feminized version).
This is because it is simply impossible to discern the sex of a cannabis seed just by visually inspecting it, and even without growing it to the beginning of the flowering stage. Regular seeds can be either male or female, and if you are growing weed for the sake of having your own buds to enjoy, it’s only the ladies you will be wanting in your garden. Male plants do not grow flowers, instead producing little ball-shaped sacs filled with pollen. Having a single male plant in your garden can put the entire crop at risk, as one male can easily pollinate a truly mindblowing amount of ladies, and over a large area.
Since males and females can only be visually separated once the pre-flowers begin to form, you are going to waste a bunch of time, energy, and resources growing the plants to this point only to rid the garden of them once the pollen sacs start to form. It has been shown that pollen from one male plant can pollinate female plants within a 3 to 5-mile radius, dependent on environmental factors. Pollinated females will still produce flowers, but these buds will contain seeds. Pollinated females need to use a lot of energy to grow these seeds, instead of concentrating their energy purely on producing the flowers.
So, unless you are wanting to dabble in the fine art of cannabis breeding and strain creation, stick to feminized seeds. It just makes cultivation so much easier.
Growing Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
While we have seen awesome results in both indoor and outdoor gardens with Kush Mints feminized seeds, these particular seeds do very well in a hydroponic setup indoors. The even 50/50 split offers this cultivar great resistance to most pest and fungal issues that can plague cannabis crops, and thanks to the overall ease of cultivation and wide range of suitable climatic conditions, we regard this strain as an all levels option.
The flowering period of 8 to 10 weeks (depending on the environmental conditions) makes this a great option for a perpetual harvest setup.
Should I Grow ‘Kush Mints Feminized Seeds Indoors or Outdoors?
That’s really up to you, and comes down to the space you have available, the local climate, and the state and federal laws that apply to your area.
Growing Kush Mints Feminized Indoors
As we mentioned above, Kush Mints Feminized explodes when grown indoors hydroponically, but that’s not to say it doesn’t also do very well with organic cultivation techniques.
For indoor gardens with Kush Mints as the star of the show, it is best to keep the temperature range within the accepted range, and that also goes for the relative humidity level. This changes as the plants develop and grow, with a starting RH of around 65 to 70% and a temp window of around 78 F – 85 F for seedlings. Both of the values need to be lowered once full vegetative growth has begun, to around 50 to 55% RH and 75 F – 80 F, and again slightly during the flowering growth stage.
Growing Kush Mints Feminized Outdoors
If you are more of an outdoor Dr. Greenthumb, then Kush Mints is a great option for your next garden.
Hardy, robust, and offering larger than usual yields full of the most deliciously dank buds.
The flowering period will be slightly longer than when grown indoors, but only minimally. Expect to be able to harvest your sun-grown Kush Mints within 9 to 11 weeks of full flower growth beginning. Plant the seeds early in the season to see huge plants by the time harvest rolls around.
How Much Do Kush Mints Feminized Seeds Yield?
Again, the final yield weight is very much dependent on a huge range of factors. The longer you grow, the more you will realize that practice really does make perfect when it comes to cannabis cultivation, until it doesn’t. This is especially true for outdoor gardeners, with the environmental control taken somewhat out of your hands.
But, as a general rule of thumb…
Indoor-grown Kush Mint Feminized seeds will usually produce over a pound per square meter (16-19 oz./m2).
Outdoor Kush Mints Feminized plants will normally end up with a larger yield size, especially if grown for the entire season.
How To Get Better Yields From Your Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
There are a bunch of ways that you, the cultivator, can increase the chances of each and every one of your Kush Mints Feminized seeds producing the types of yield we all dream of. Lets take a look at few of the main factors you should be thinking about before and during the cultivation process.
The Best Grow Medium for Kush Mints Seeds
While hydroponic setups do offer the best chance at heavy harvests, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with all the different growing substrates.
If you are a little unsure which path to go down, we suggest checking out Coco-Coir. Coco-coir is a hydroponic medium that works very much like soil, but thanks to the fact that it is totally inert, you have full control over the nutrient levels during the growing process. It is made from the ground-up outer husks of (you guessed it) coconuts, and offers a similar level of root support and protection as soil while allowing for much higher rates of root zone oxygenation and drainage. Always go for a cannabis-specific coco-coir blend if possible, and look for an option that contains around 30% perlite.
But again, Kush Mintz feminized does really well in a good soil blend, with a full organic nutrient regime. The yields may be slightly smaller than with coco or pure hydro set ups, but many cultivators and consumers prefer the final product.
The Best Climate for Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
We have already run through the best indoor conditions for Kush Mints Feminized, but what about the perfect outdoor climate?
The perfect climate for Kush Mints is one that can offer your plants a steady dose of all-day sunlight, and keep temps and RH levels within the ideal growing window for cannabis.
Kush Mints love the warmth, but if the temps are peaking above 85 F or so you may see some signs of heat stress. To combat this, make sure you set up some form of shade over your plants if the daytime temperatures are getting close to the 85 F mark, and remember that plants in hotter environments need a little extra water.
If you live in a slightly colder region, you may want to build your own greenhouse. There are many options available, but even a small plastic sheeting set up can offer enough protection to get you through the colder times.
Problems to Look Out For When Growing Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
Kush Mintz Feminized comes with a healthy and robust amount of natural resistance to pests, disease, and mold issues – but that doesn’t mean this strain is immune to all problems.
Mildew, mold, and bud rot are the main issues you may run into during the flowering phase of your grow.
In order to avoid these issues, it is important that you set up a good air circulation system with multiple fans, and make sure the RH levels are kept within the ideal range. If you are struggling with keeping the humidity in check, make sure that you are not over-watering the crop and try to spread the canopy out as much as possible to allow for better air circulation.
Nutrient deficiencies can strike any strain, so watch out for the signs and signals of these and always use a decent EC or TDS meter when mixing up your nutrient solution (if you are growing hydroponically, or with coco-coir). The same goes for pH regulation.
How Difficult Is It To Grow Kush Mints Feminized Seeds?
Kush Mint Feminized seeds are one of the easier-to-grow balanced hybrids on the entire market.
Are Kush Mints Feminized Seeds Suitable for Beginners?
Yes indeed. There are very few better options for novice cultivators.
The Best Grow Techniques for Kush Mints Feminized Seeds
New growers are often overwhelmed by the veritable smorgasbord of growing techniques that are suggested online. Let’s stick to the three options we see the best success from, and keep it all very simple yeah?
Topping
While most HST (High-Stress Training) techniques are not really suggested for novice growers, topping is just too much of a powerful method not to suggest. By carefully cutting the shoot at the top of the main stem (just about the node, where the newest branches are developing), we force the plant into making the next two branches into the two main stems, rather than the one.
This means more bud sites and larger yields – so even if you are a beginner, topping is one of the best techniques to increase your yield without any fear of losing it all with a failed experiment. It also promotes a horizontal plane of growth, which makes the next technique not only more effective but also easier to implement.
ScrOG
The Screen Of Green training technique is very simple and super easy to get going. All you have to do is build your screen – usually made from a metal or plastic frame – and attach it to the grow room or the individual pots. The frame holds a screen (or net), which allows you to carefully attach and orientate the branches as they grow.
The goal here is to spread out your canopy as much as possible so that all of the budding sites receive equal light coverage and penetration. This also allows for much more efficient air exchange and circulation within the canopy itself, lowering any chance of mold issues occurring.
Defoliation (Fan Leaf Pruning)
Now, this is a slightly debatable training technique. Some growers swear by it, whereas others are of the opinion that it is a bit of a waste of time. But here at Premium Cultivars, we are team defoliation and are of the thinking that defoliation (when done correctly) will definitely help with the overall yield size.
Defoliation consists of removing the fan leaves that are blocking out any light from reaching the lower nodes. This will create an efficient light-distribution environment, with more of the energy focused toward the buds – which can result in larger colas and better yields.
Make sure you don’t go too crazy with it though. It’s best to defoliate twice during the entire cannabis lifecycle, and to never take more than about 25% of the fan leaves off at once. For timing, we suggest 10 days before flowering begins, and then again about 20 days into full flower production.
