Chemdawg Strain History
Generally, not a lot is known about where the Chemdawg strain originated from, with several stories about it in existence. Some people believe it is the progeny of a strain from Colorado called Dog Bud while others say it was formed during a switch at a Grateful Dead Concert.
Of all the stories, the most widely shared is one involving two growers from Colorado – Joe Brand and P Bud.
After meeting at a Grateful Dead concert, they maintained contact and later shared their cannabis seeds with a third friend. The friend received the cannabis as one batch – what would later become Chemdawg.
What Are the Parents of Chemdawg?
As mentioned, the origins of Chemdawg cannabis are not very clear except that it is a hybrid strain descending from two different genetic lines. According to experts, the strain has Thai and Nepali genetics and has also been used to produce other notable strains like OG Kush and Sour Diesel.
Is Chemdawg Indica or Sativa?
Chemdawg cannabis is a sativa-dominant strain.
Growing the Chemdawg Cannabis Strain
As a grower, you will love the Chemdawg strain for its resin-rich buds and ability to produce impressively large yields. The strain grows best in dry, sunny climates, preferably outside.

You can grow Chemdawg from seeds or you could acquire cuts from another grower cultivating the strain. However you obtain it, it is important to note that Chemdawg grows very tall – often beyond 5 feet – so you will need to start pruning and bending during the vegetative stage. Doing this early will help you maintain your plants at a manageable height.
Chemdawg has a flowering time of 9 to 10 weeks and will usually produce high yields or around 65 to 75 grams per square foot. Remember, this strain is very potent so take great care to be discreet during the growing and harvesting seasons, especially if you have nosy neighbors.
Is Chemdawg Suitable for Beginners?
Most experts would not recommend growing a Chemdawg pot if you are a beginner. While it tends to produce generous yields, it requires a lot of care and maintenance. As mentioned, Chemdawg is a very tall plant so you will need to work to curb its high-reaching tendencies. It is also very potent and requires you to go the extra mile to be discreet. That said, you can try planting it if you are up for a challenge and can provide your plants with the care they need. You will not be disappointed.
Variations of the Chemdawg Strain
Chemdawg Auto is a more compact version of the original strain that is just as great as the original strain.
As an autoflowering version, Chemdawg Auto flowers very fast and is not very fussy about lighting changes It is also easier to prune, which makes it a better option for novice growers than the photoperiod variation.
Besides an auto variation, Chemdawg is also a response for two child strains that are just as impressive as their parent – Sour Diesel and OG Kush.
